Getting Ready For Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving celebrates the harvest as well as giving thanks for the good things from the past 12 months and is a major part of the year for many of our customers. It has its roots in the meal which was shared by the Pilgrims and the North American First Nation tribes in 1621.
Thanksgiving spreads include pumpkin pies, gigantic turkeys, and sweet potato casseroles. So, if you’re keen to join in the festivities and enjoy some staple Thanksgiving dishes, carry on reading – we promise you won’t be disappointed!
Thanksgiving falls on 28th November this year and the main culinary focus will be the turkey. While turkey wasn't the centre piece in 1621, it gained popularity as it was local and plentiful - plus, turkeys were larger than chickens, ducks, and geese, making them a great choice to serve to a crowd
If a huge turkey seems like a lot of work and you’re not in the mood for storing all the leftovers, this Lidgate Turkey Crown is the ideal solution. It is free-range and available from 2-5kg (each kg serves 2-3 people). We remove the legs for you, making it easier to carve, and perfect for those who enjoy the leaner white meat of the breast. To go with it, there is a great turkey crown recipe with a chestnut truffle stuffing which is simple and gets the best out of this versatile dish. It uses a light truffle flavour which is amazing when paired with the flavours of chestnuts, mushrooms, and thyme and can be created with the Lidgate Organic Black Truffle Oil, which is made using black summer truffles, and is intense and fragrant.
For those who have more mouths to feed and want to prepare the entire turkey bird, we have our Woodland Bronze Turkey. Our free-range turkeys feed on nettles, blackberries, and oats and have a healthier outdoor existence than ordinary mass-produced birds, enhancing quality and flavour. Our website includes all our tips and tricks for cooking your Bronze Turkey, with a step-by-step video on how to carve it.
We know that roasting a bird can be tiring work, so if you’re looking for the right place to cut corners, why not try our rich and flavourful Turkey Gravy which is super easy to warm up and serve. Other classic Thanksgiving accompaniments include cornbread, sweet potato mash, and cauliflower cheese.
There is also a sweeter side of a Thanksgiving feast which revolves around one star item… the pie and anyone that has been lucky enough to enjoy a good one will understand why. It’s a time of year that our Lidgate bakers try our handmade Pumpkin Pie using fresh pumpkins which is available for a limited time. This dessert is bursting with autumnal spiced flavours – showcasing pumpkin at its best and as a symbol of harvest time. We also have a Pecan Pie and an Apple Pie which can be bought whole or by the slice. Brilliant by themselves, or with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream, no Thanksgiving dinner is complete without a festive pie finale.
Happy Thanksgiving to anybody celebrating – here’s to making this week’s meals something to be thankful for.
