New Month, New Tastes

New Month, New Tastes

If you think time is passing ever more quickly than ever, it might not surprise you to learn that November actually used to mark the start of the new year. November also marked the Feast of St. Martins, celebrated with something beefy and spicy to mark the end of the wheat seeding season. In this week’s newsletter – I’m sharing what else is special about November.

November used to mark the start of the new year and was a time when the cattle were brought in from their pastures into their winter quarters. November may be the forgotten month, squashed between the end of the summer holiday and the start of the Christmas one – but it has its own delights. As Keats said, it is the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”. Clementines are coming into season, while wild mushrooms and the much cherished white truffle, are still in season.

Most famously of course it is Guy Fawkes Night on November 5th. While many will be celebrating with fireworks – we of course can join in with our own bangers. We like to think we have some of the best sausages you can find anywhere in the country.
