National Bacon Butty Day

National Bacon Butty Day

The day you’ve been waiting for is nearly here…National Bacon Butty Day is on the 23rd September. The bacon sarnie is a British favourite and a simple recipe – fried bacon between two pieces of soft white bread, often with a slathering of butter, and either ketchup or brown sauce. We aren’t surprised they’ve decided to name a whole day after it. If you thought you knew everything there was to know about the humble bacon sandwich, think again. There’s plenty of innovative bacon butty inspired recipes out there that are an absolutely must-try.

Originally becoming popular in the industrial revolution, when workers needed quick, heart meals, bacon was an ideal ingredient as it was relatively inexpensive and easy to prepare. There has been much debate over which bacon is our superior, but you can’t go wrong with our Maple Streaky Bacon, a delicious pork flavour with a sweet maple cure. For those wanting to elevate their sarnies, we would recommend using lightly pan-toasted bread, thin slices of tomato, a small amount of rocket, our chipotle barbecue sauce, and sweet caramelised onions. The onions pair perfectly with the maple flavours in the meat, and even the bacon butty purists might give it a try!

For those who are feeling a bit more adventurous, how about trying a French toast bacon sandwich. For this recipe, we would recommend our Unsmoked Back Bacon which provides the perfect flavours to compliment this unusual dish. Like you would with traditional French toast, soak the bread in a mixture of egg and milk, before frying in a pan with butter until golden and crispy. Fry the bacon until crispy as well, and place in between the French toast, with a drizzling of maple syrup and icing sugar. Perfect for those with a sweet tooth, this quirky take on the sweet flavour and crispy texture of bacon is certainly a brunch contender.

For those who love British brunch food such as bacon butties, the flavours of a Bloody Mary will surely be familiar. This recipe fuses the staple tomato-based drink with the popular sandwich, and the results looks delicious. For the Bloody Mary base, all you need is tomato puree, butter, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco. Mix all the ingredients and chill in the fridge. Once cool, the Bloody Mary butter can be spread on your bread of choice, accompanied with rocket, and our Smoked Streaky bacon. Lastly, grate some mature cheddar and toast the sandwiches in a frying pan. This recipe is great as you can adjust the spice levels to suit your tastes, and it’s a great excuse to pour yourself a liquid Bloody Mary too!
