Hearty Autumn Feasts

A silver lining to the colder and wetter weather we’ve been having is the joy of cosy autumnal recipes that leave you feeling full and nourished. We’ve had a look into the science behind how seasonal cooking has been linked to the harsher weather, and are suggesting some delicious recipes to take advantage of fall flavours. Think slow-cooking, rich comforting tastes, and the perfect meat and vegetable combinations to satisfy the cravings we get in the colder months.

As we approach Autumn, we tend to crave nutrient-dense and warming foods, especially root vegetables (carrots, parsnips, potatoes), and a variety of meats. These ingredients provide essential vitamins and minerals that help to boost the immune system during the colder months.

Served piping hot, this dish contributes to a phenomenon called the ‘thermogenic effect’, which physically warms up the body, promoting blood circulation and making us feel calm, satiated, and comfortable.

So why not experiment with something more unusual – such as this Beef & Guinness stew with carrots. Our diced steak is great for stewing, and are an easy option for a range of recipes

The cosiness we associate with Halloween, Bonfire Night, and Thanksgiving is often related to nostalgic gastronomic associations of Autumn. Evoking memories of seasonal traditions and family gatherings, a comforting emotional response to food has been shown to counteract the gloominess of shorter, darker days. That’s why at this time of year people call upon classic dishes such as Shepherd’s Pie or Chicken Pot Pie. Opt for meals that contain dense carbohydrates, proteins, and warming spices that leave you feeling truly nourished. Most of these recipes will involve long cooking times, so to avoid spending hours in the kitchen why some of our ready-made options such as our indulgent Game Pie, or perfectly seasoned Cottage Pie.

It's true that the right mixture of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates can help stabilise energy levels and keep you fuller for longer in the cold weather. Certain ingredients may improve specific functions of the body. For example, ginger, garlic, and cayenne peppers may improve circulation and digestion, and rosemary, thyme, and sage, are believed to have immunity-boosting effects.

Stuffings are a great way to incorporate such flavours alongside meat dishes, such as our Sage & Onion Stuffing with Pork or Rosemary, Apricot, Hazelnut & Garlic lamb variety.

Whether it’s to boost your physical or mental wellbeing during this time, or simply to return to your favourite seasonal dishes, take advantage of the cold but cosy weather with some truly Autumnal food!
