Delicious December

December is the perfect time to enjoy rich, deep meats – think turkey and game. You can also make the most of root vegetables such as curried parsnip soup, or try a pumpkin & beef stew or make the most of the wonderful seasonal chestnuts. There are lot of great chestnut traditional recipes but I was rather intrigued by this one, for Italian Sausage and Chestnut Pasta, which is more unusual and I think I’ll be trying it out soon.

Stilton, the "king of English cheeses", is synonymous with Christmas. It is as festive as clove studded oranges and large tins of Quality Street. The reason for this seasonal link is not altogether clear. One theory is that for many years cheese was made between April and June, with the first flush of milk. After a harsh winter spring would bring a swell of milk to feed the new calves and the excess was turned into cheese. As stilton took between six and eight months to mature, it was ready in time for Christmas and became a seasonal treat. We have a wonderful Stilton available here.

Sprouts in Blankets - two Christmas icons combined…What’s not to love? The sprouts are infused with the cooking bacon fat, creating melt-in-the-mouth deliciousness. There are

Always our own Lidgate’s traditional Pigs In Blankets which are a firm family favourite.

Cranberry Roast Beef - We tend to concentrate on turkey at this time of year, but I came across this amazing sounding recipe, which makes the most of seasonal cranberries. This Cranberry Balsamic Roast Beef is a little tangy and a little sweet.  The recipe is here
