Danny's Days - 2nd March 2026

This week March is upon us, who would believe it. What happened to January and February? I’ve been quite busy talking to our farmers, who are now thankfully experiencing better weather conditions. Unfortunately, the financial situation is tough for most of them. A combination of multiple cashflow and poor harvest problems are really hitting home. As you can imagine, most farmers are happy to deal with retail butchers -  who may not have the sales volumes as the big supermarkets, but who pay a fair price and create sustainable relationships over multiple generations. This was an ethos that was drummed into me as a child and an ethos, I’m proud to continue with as part of our business model.

As Virginia Woolf, who was an English writer and one of the most influential 20th-century modernist authors, also born in Kensington once said, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well". That all begins with the livestock in the fields.

There will be a full moon in the early hours of Tuesday morning. It will be a blood moon meaning the earth moves directly between the sun and the moon, casting and filtering sunlight through our atmosphere, giving the moon it’s dramatic red colour. The last total lunar eclipse for nearly 3 years will be visible to nearly 2.5 billion people. The Worm Moon is the traditional name for the full moon that occurs in March. It is typically the final full moon of the winter season and serves as a natural indicator that spring is approaching. Most commonly, it is believed to refer to the earthworms that begin to emerge from the thawing soil as temperatures rise in early spring, which in turn invites robins and other birds to feed.

I hope you all have a great week, and as Virginia mentions, blessed with thinking well, loving well, sleeping well and dining well.

The very best wishes

Danny
