Hon’s BBQ

When: Opened 17th July

Where: The White Building, Queen’s Yard, E9 5EN

Book: https://www.honsbbq.com

This ‘Texan BBQ with an Asian twist’ has landed in the White Building in Queen’s Yard in east London. They’ve taken over a warehouse-like space above Crate Brewery by the canal, transforming it into a trendy new restaurant. The food, cocktail list, wines and late-night music all combine to make Hon’s a fun and lively spot that’s well worth a visit.

So, what should you order? Everything arrives as it’s ready, so a collection of hot dishes to share is probably the best way to approach your meal. The Tomato Melon Salad is a spicy starter and a great side dish to accompany any of the barbecued meats. The Duck Pancakes are a fairly simple crowd-pleaser, with nicely cooked, tender duck. The Taiwanese Pork Belly is equally tasty, although you might want to order a few hundred grams of it, as the portion sizes are fairly small.

For a much heftier meal, go for the Beef Short Ribs served in Sichuan peppercorn sauce. The ribs are smoked, seasoned and topped with a large pepper. It won’t be the cleanest meal to eat, but you certainly won’t go home hungry. The Lap Cheong Mac & Cheese and Beef Dripping Oil Rice are popular options to order alongside one of the larger mains.

For drinks, you can’t go wrong with a Crate lager, but their Tequila, Pineapple & Lime cocktail soda can is also an affordable and refreshing option.

It’s a fun spot, which might not be the fanciest but is definitely worth paying a visit to.

New Plate Club – Latino Oasis

This Friday, grab your tickets for the second Dining Club Night at New Plat Club. You will be served an authentic Colombian meal, sat around in the sociable dining area of Latino Oasis. While the menu remains hidden until it’s put right in front of you, the chef will be cooking up Colombian dishes with a modern twist. This two course feast, with a welcome drink and great music, is all included in the £40 ticket. The first night was a sold-out hit, so grab your tickets soon. Tickets can be bought here.

Saturday Brunch Menu at the King and Co

The King and Co pub in Clapham has a great track record of pop-up restaurants coming in and out of the kitchen. Chef Nathan Hart has recently returned and is doing a special Mexican brunch menu which might pique your interest. The Chilaquiles Rojos or Verdes are tortilla chips covered in red or green sauce, fried eggs, sour cream, feta and suadero beef, with your choice of pork belly or chicken. The Divorced Eggs is another fun choice, including two fried eggs on corn tortillas, or the Goditas de Nata with bacon and eggs, which includes griddle cakes, crispy bacon, fried eggs and avocado. To top it all off, there are £8 Margheritas available until 5PM, perfect for a boozy Sunday brunch. Details here.

Gordon Ramsey Pad Thai Masterclass

At the Gordon Ramsay Academy, you can learn from scratch or even perfect your Pad Thai skills. The class is only an hour long, so they get straight to it, unsurprising in a cookery school set up by the celeb chef. Whilst you learn to cook, enjoy a well-deserved drink whilst looking over the whole of London’s skyline from their state-of-the-art Sky High Kitchen. If you’re up for it, tickets can be booked here.
