Danny's Days - 16th September 2024

This week we’ve seen some changing weather. Some cold mornings, some sunny evenings, quite a downpour of rain - hello autumn in the UK!

This Tuesday (17th September) marks another full moon. This moon is called The Corn Moon or Harvest Moon and refers to the full moon that happens closest to the autumn equinox. As this moon rises at roughly the same time for several evenings in a row, farmers have several evenings of moonlight to allow them to finish harvests before fall frost arrives. The “harvest” moniker stems from the moonrise coming soon after sunset for several evenings. This results in an abundance of bright moonlight early in the evening, which has traditionally been a helpful resource for farmers and crews harvesting their summer-grown crops.

This seasonal moon reminds us of the seasonal foods we enjoy in welcome and encourages us to eat the foods our ancestors ate at this time. September is probably the most abundant month for British grown produce. Summer crops, such as salads, tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers and runner beans are still highly productive.

Meanwhile autumn crops such as apples, pears, squash and leeks are nearly ready for harvestingThis makes a great accompaniment for the Grouse and Redleg Partridge available in September, Pheasants are not far away and will be available next month.

I hope you all have a great week, full of success, abundance and happiness. Don’t forget to have a look up at the moon if you get a chance and appreciate one of natures beauties.

The very best wishes

Danny
